something in the water

Is everyone having relationship woes at the moment?

A great writer once said, in the guise of one of her characters, that resignation is never so perfect as when the thing desired loses somewhat of its value in our estimation. Too true. I seem to have skipped very quickly over the rose-tinted glasses phase of post-breakup angst, where you only remember all the good things you had together, and none of the crap. Still, I suppose sooner or later the righteous anger will fade and true acceptance of the situation will settle in.

I just wish it meant something to the person I'm angry with to know to that I am hurting...

aspirations

If there were two people from history that I could invite to dinner, the two I would invite without hesitation would be Elizabeth I and Charles II, queen and king of England respectively. I admire them for their statecraft, their ability to manage people's affections and loyalty, and to always keep people guessing as to their true motives. True power, it would seem, rests upon one's ability to gain love, without the need for judgement - if one can manipulate the devotion of others, not coldly, but with a care for their interests, therein lies the strength that warrants lasting admiration.

This is the kind of wisdom to which I aspire.
