Blood money

As if we needed any more evidence of the worsening state of the world - seal fur is once again the height of fashion. Sure, the club-happy Canadians may say that seal-slaughterers are supposed to use rifles and make sure the animals are dead before they're skinned... that doesn't stop the evidence of clubbing and skinning of still-conscious seals from leaking through the flimsy public relations facade.

How people can wear, much less make money from, the skins of wild animals and sleep at night is beyond my comprehension. The uber-practical and conscience-free may say that it's no different from wearing leather made from cows or indeed wool shorn from sheep - but it IS different, for the very same reason that eating whale meat, for example, is different from eating cow, pig or sheep meat. There is no way of humanely killing a whale - the animals are subjected to prolonged agony before finally dying. Most evidence suggests that this happens to the slaughtered seals, too.

Vainly the club-wielding furmongers protest that the slaughter of seals in their thousands (possibly millions) is economically and ecologically sound practice. To that I would answer that slaughtering humans in their millions would also be economically and ecologically sound - in fact it would probably be doing the world an immense favour. But do we see anyone coming forward to congratulate the likes of Hitler and Saddam? I think not.
