It had to be done. The bridge was not sound; structurally damaged and probably unsafe to use.
And it was only a small thing, after all, barely noticeable against the landscape.
So it was burned without ceremony.
As witnesses to its passing, we stood on either side of it, neither making a last attempt to cross to the other. We simply watched, while it reduced to ashes and drifted away on the wind.
And when it was gone, we turned our backs and walked away...
