In which I rant about whininess
Aug. 20th, 2006 04:17 pmIs that even a word?
Well, it will do as a descriptive term for the current bee that has taken up lodgings in my bonnet.
There seems to have been a spate of whiny songs on commercial radio of late (92.9 is always playing at work, so I've been swamped with lowbrow 'entertainment' over the last couple of months).
The latest song to really piss me off in this category is Unfaithful. What is this chick's problem? Sex mania? Why have a big emo whinge about cheating on your partner, as if it's something anyone other than yourself can do anything about? "Oh, woe is me, it's so hard not to have sex with other men, and it really hurts my partner, and I really want to stop, and I'm so noble for saying that, but I keep doing it, and I just can't stop, but I want to..." Please. Is there someone holding a gun to her head?
I know this is a really weird thing to rant about, but it just seems like another symptom of the 'it's not my fault' culture. Disavowing responsibility for one's own actions seems to be the norm these days, and it bugs the shit out of me. And now pop music is glorifying the trend.
Okay. Taking my preacher's hat off now. Strange what inspires one to write, ain't it?
